Donations to SHS Scholarships - update 12/12/11

This letter will bring you up to date on donations to the SHS Scholarships Program. This program was started in 2008 by Jack Hutslar [SHS 1957] and a few other very important SHS grads.

The purpose of this letter is to ask you to begin making an annual donation today to the SHS Scholarships Program. And, we also ask you to gather two more classmates, friends and relatives who will join you in becoming annual donors.

2 get 2 who get 2 who get 2. That is our campaign strategy.

No donation is too small. It might be $19.57, the year I was graduated from SHS, or $195.70 or even $1.957.00

The donations we receive are sent to and kept by The Springfield Foundation. Eventually, they will help us sort through the scholarship applicants and make awards.

Our first goal is to reach $35,000 in donations. Then we can begin awarding scholarships to new SHS graduates. We now have over 50 separate donors who have contributed over $7,000. Each year we have surpassed the previous year in giving. We are making slow and steady progress.

Concussions

Do you really want to reduce concussions in sports like football. Then …

1. Remove the facemasks from the football helmet. That will change immediately the way that players block and tackle.

OR

2. Get rid of the hard shell helmets. Use soft helmets made of the material similar to what is used in wrestling mats. No facemasks.

OR

3. Pad the outside of the hard shell helmets the same way that Woody Hayes pioneered it for just one season at OSU back in the early 1960s.

By the way, Coach Hayes told us in class why he stopped doing it. Our Buckeye ball carriers became accustomed to getting hit in practice with soft helmets. However, In games, our ball carriers were getting hit on the hands with the hard helmets of our opponents. That caused fumbles. So, Coach Hayes discontinued the use of soft helmet padding to help stop our ball carriers from fumbling the ball. So, this tells us that all teams need to adopt one of the three suggestions above, not just some of the teams.

The tax-deductible contributions to the SHS Scholarships Program through December 3, 2011 have brought our total over $7,200.00 from over 50 different donors. We are making steady progress and that is quite important for those who have not yet become annual donors. Have you heard of the Power of Two.

Well, you know that 2 times 2 is 4

4 doubled is 8, but

4 doubled is a total of 12. This occurs when each of the four original donors gather 2 new donors. Then we will then have a total of 12 donors, 8 of whom are new donors.

When those 8 donors gather two new donors each, we will have 16 more new donors. See how fast it multiplies.

We are asking our annual donors to gather two new friends and relatives who will then become annual donors.

This strategy is not difficult to begin. The effects on our ability to award the SHS Scholarships to deserving students will be dramatic. With your help, this will happen. When we help our new SHS grads, we help Springfield.

Our 2011 Fundraising Campaign for SHS Scholarships Program starts with letters to all previous donors and this email to those who have not yet become annual donors.

• Asking all annual donors to ask two others to begin making annual donations.

• Asking all North, South and SHS graduates to begin making an annual donation, today.

• Asking all North, South and SHS graduates to ask your reunion committee to begin making an annual donation.

• Asking all North, South and SHS graduates to help by spreading the word among your classmates and friends.

• Asking for volunteers in Springfield to help us conduct one or two annual fundraising events.

• Asking for a Springfield company to help us generate giving the Springfield as a company wide service project.

• Seeking an annual event in Springfield like flea market, antique show, car show, walk-a-thon, 10K, tournament [basketball, bowling, golf, Putt-Putt, softball, tennis etc], supper or breakfast, bike ride or motorcycle rally to partner with the SHS Scholarships to help us generate funds for our new SHS graduates.

2011 SHS Wildcats Football results

2011 SHS Wildcats Football results starting with the most recent game at the top of this post. SHS home games are played at Evans Stadium.

Wi-Wi-Wild. Ca-Ca-Cats. W-I-L-D-C-A-T-S. W-I-L-D-C-A-T-S. Yea wildcats. [1950s version]

It was a tough season for the Wildcats. The head football coach resigned. They began the pre-season late as a new coach was not selected as soon as would have been preferred. Then the season dragged on with injuries and suspensions. Yet, there is great hope for next year with an exciting group of offensive firepower returning.

Northmont * SHS Wildcats drop 20-14 squeeker to Northmont in season finale at Evans Stadium according to GWOC report.

OR SHS Wildcats drop 33 to 20 decision to Northmont in another report of the final score on the Northmont web site. The SHS site at News-Sun now indicates that the final score was 33 to 20. Finish the season 2-8 and 1-4 in the GWOC.

Centerville * SHS Wildcats punished by Centerville Elks 56 -15. Really big ouch. SHS 2-7 & 1-3 in Conference. Elks 6-3 & 4-0 in SWOC conference. No details reported.

SHS Wildcats fall to Beavercreek Beavers * 13-0 as 7 Wildcats were suspended for the game. SHS drops to 2-6. Beavers now 5-3. No other details

SHS Wildcat football homecoming game Friday 7:30 vs Beavercreek then Homecoming “Enchanted Garden” Dance on Saturday the 15th 8:00 to 11:00pm.

Wayne * stomps all over the SHS Wildcats 47 to 6 in GWOC conference game. We drop to 1-5 on the season. Ouch. That hurts.

Trotwood * 37 - SHS Wildcats 13. SHS drops to 1-4 on season. Next game against Wayne.

SHS Wildcats come out on top at Miamisburg 26 to 3. Improve to 1-3 on season. Miamisburg falls to 2-2 without injured QB. Next game vs Trotwood.

SHS Wildcats drop 33-20 verdict to Sycamore Aviators at Evans Stadium Fri night. Defense unable to stop Sycamore as SHS offense plays well.

Upper Arlington 34 - SHS 19. Wallace has 300+ yards passing. Montgomery has 200+ yards receiving. SUS is an exciting team to watch.

Wildcats are reaping the rewards of success. Sunday’s matchup with Upper Arlington in the Kirk Herbstreit Kickoff Classic at Ohio Stadium in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU 3:30pm

The year is 2016 and the United States has just elected the first woman, an Ohio State graduate, as President of the United States, Susan Buckeye.

A few days after the election the president-elect calls her father and says, "So, Dad, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?"

"I don't think so. It's a 8 hour drive, your mother isn't as young as she used to be, and my arthritis is acting up again."

"Don't worry about it Dad, I'll send Air Force One to pick you up in Vandalia and take you home. And a limousine will pick you up at your door."

"I don't know. Everybody will be so fancy. What would your mother wear?"

"Oh Dad," replies Susan, "I'll make sure she has a wonderful gown custom-made by the best designer in Springfield."

"Honey," Dad complains, "you know I can't eat those rich foods that you and your friends like to eat."

The President-to-be responds, "Don't worry Dad. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in New York. I'll ensure your meals are salt free Dad. I really want you to come."

So Dad reluctantly agrees and on January 20, 2017, Susan Buckeye is being sworn in as President of the United States, with her Mom and Dad in the front row for her big moment.

Dad notices the Senator sitting next to him and leans to and whispers with undeniable pride, "You see that woman there with her hand on the Bible, becoming President of the United States?"

The Senator whispers back, "Yes I do."

Dad says proudly, "Her brother played football at Ohio State."

O - H - - I - O

This reminds me of the OSU alumni who died. He went to heaven, of course. While taking the grand tour, they walked into that great football stadium in the heavens.

Lo and behold ... there was Woody Hayes standing right there on the sidelines, baseball cap and in his white short-sleeved shirt.

The new Buckeye arrival said, "Wow, I cannot believe that I am seeing Woody right down there on the sidelines."

The heavenly guide said:

"Oh, that's not Woody. That's God, He just thinks he's Woody Hayes."

Kate Smith sings God Bless America

Here Is a Real Star

In case you don't know it, this is the person that is referred to as "The Fat Lady" in the trite verbalization of "It's not over till the fat lady sings". Kate Smith was born and grew up in Columbia, Missouri In early 1940, Kate Smith, a fiercely patriotic American, and the biggest star on radio, was deeply worried about her country.

She asked Irving Berlin if he could give her a song that would re-ignite the spirit of American patriotism and faith. He said he had a song that he had written in 1917, but never used it. He said she could have it. She sat at the piano & played it and realized how good it was. She called Mr. Berlin and told him that she couldn't take this from him for nothing.

So, they agreed that any money that would be made off the song would be donated to the Boy Scouts of America.

Thanks to Kate Smith and Irving Berlin, the Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties.

Frank Sinatra said that when Kate Smith, whom he considered the greatest singer of his age, first sang this song on the radio, a million guys got 'dust' in their eyes and had to wipe the tears the 'dust' caused. What is the difference between http and https when looking at URLs?

Do not know how many of you are aware of this difference, but it is worth sending it out to any that do not know.

The main difference between http:// and https:// is . . . It's all about keeping you secure.

HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol

The S (big surprise) stands for "Secure." If you visit a website or web page, and look at the address in the web browser, it will likely begin with the following: http://.

This means that the website is talking to your browser using the regular "unsecured" language. In other words, it is possible for someone to "eavesdrop" on your computer's conversation with the website. When you fill out a form on the website, someone might see the information you send to that site.

This is why you never ever enter your credit card number in an http website! But if the web address begins with https://, that basically means your computer is talking to the website in a secure code where no one can eavesdrop.

You understand why this is so important, right?

If a website ever asks you to enter your credit card information, you should automatically look to see if the web address begins with https://.

If it does not start with https://, you should NEVER enter sensitive information such as a credit card number.

PASS IT ON. You may save someone a lot of grief.

Year End Giving

As the year comes to a close, it is time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. Perhaps this is the year that you can truly make a difference in the lives of our new SHS graduates through a charitable gift. Here are a few ways that you can contribute to the SHS Scholarships:

Columbus North 50th Reunion

My wife and I attended the 50th reunion of her class from Columbus North. The reunion get-togethers were held at several places on the north side of Columbus in the Polaris area. The finale on Saturday night was at The Lakes CC. Very posh. No head-banger music - very piano bar mellow. I was nice to see how other classes do it. In reviewing their handouts, it was interesting to see how many of their gradates, both male and female, held professional degrees. A very respectable group indeed.

Columbus North, just off North High Street on Aacadia, became an administrative center. Now it is called a swing school. This means that they hold classes there when there are space issues at other schools. Back in the day, many if not most of their students walked to school.

I did my student coaching [baseball] at Columbus North as part of my teaching certificate from Ohio State.

Dick Evey. SHS football great. 1961-63 U Tenn. Drafted by Chicago Bear. NFL 1964-1971. Was All-Pro defensive lineman. Now retired in Tenn.

SHS Scholarships Seeking Donors

Jack Hutslar, a former teacher, coach and 1957 SHS graduate, announced the creation of the SHS Scholarships. It was started to provide scholarships for current-year Springfield High School graduates who wish to pursue education and training after high school.

Hutslar started working on the idea of scholarships for SHS graduates about 10 years ago. Hutslar, an Ohio State alumni [B.S., Ph.D.], noted that he rarely found Springfield linked to names in The Ohio State Monthly alumni magazine. He said: “Local scholarships would help motivate SHS graduates to pursue education after high school, whether trade school, community college or four year degree programs.”

A Wittenberg University applied management team of three undergraduate students headed by Dr Pam Schindler just concluded a thorough study of the SHS Scholarships proposal. Their recommendations provided strategic direction and tactics for how to raise funds for these scholarships. They also provided important local contact information.

As a direct result of this WittCAM study, Hutslar began contacting various SHS, North and South reunion groups, Chamber of Commerce members, selected organizations in Springfield as well as officials at Springfield High School. These people are the local base upon which to fund these scholarships.

All SHS Scholarships donations are to be sent directly to The Springfield Foundation. Horton Hobbs, development officer, is working closely with Jack Hutslar to monitor contributions. Hobbs can help donors plan how to best contribute whether one time, monthly or annually. Donations can include property and future bequests.

The initial goal is to raise $30,000 before scholarships can be awarded. The five-year goal is to raise $1 million. Thus far, over $1,100 has been collected from SHS alumni through donation letters plus nearly $5,000 in pledges. This fundraising effort is patterned after college alumni programs rather than large individual endowments. Of course, large individual donations are gladly accepted.

The more you learn, the more you earn.

The SHS Scholarships will foster two happenings. First, it will help individual students improve their own lives and that of their current and future families. It is widely known that the more you learn, the more you earn. Secondly, educated graduates will help Springfield grow and prosper by, among other things, attracting businesses that seek an educated workforce. That lifts all boats.

Service & Leadership. Academic Performance. Need.

The criteria for awarding scholarships are service and leadership to school and community, academic performance in school, and financial need plus letters of recommendation. The SHS Scholarships were set up to encourage students to engage in service and positive leadership while in school.

These criteria are well within the reach of reasonably conscientious students. For those students and their families who want to capitalize on the value of education after high school, they should also recognize that these standards do not put a premium on high academic achievement as do many scholarships. In this case, Springfield High School students will find that they are not competing with students from across the nation for scholarships. They are competing only with their fellow classmates.

There are ways that donors to the SHS Scholarships can maximize the value of their giving and protect their personal financial interests!

You can contribute to the SHS Scholarships for local use or you can contribute to The Government for distribution across the nation as our elected officials see fit.

- Tax deductible contributions to the SHS Scholarships
- Gift annuities to the SHS Scholarships
- Charitable remainder trusts

The Springfield Foundation, managers of the SHS Scholarships, provides confidential and professional assistance to our donors and their financial advisors in developing tax-efficient, and sometimes income-producing, approaches to supporting the SHS Scholarships. Gift annuities, charitable lead annuity trusts, and charitable remainder trusts can all be attractive options in today’s low-interest-rate environment. The Foundation staff can advise you on the best option for your needs.

Despite the drop in the market, assets that have been held over the long term can still generate significant capital gains taxes; donors may be able to avoid this cost by transferring the assets to the SHS Scholarships. For donors whose present financial flexibility has been limited by the economy, there are many ways to create a legacy, from designating the SHS Scholarships as the ultimate beneficiary of their retirement plans to bequests of personal property. No Donation Is Too Small

The SHS Scholarships program is now receiving donations. Our first goal is to raise $30,000 so that we can begin awarding scholarships. As of September, we have pledges for $5,000.00. The ultimate goal is to raise $1,000,000 over five years. This means that we are asking you to give, not once, but every year over the next five years.

In order to make this a perpetual scholarship program that works long after we are but memories, about five per cent of the principle will be used for scholarships each year. That allows the principle to grow.

How much should I give?

No donation is too small.

Give $5.00, $10.00 or $100.00. Give more if you can.

If you wish, you could give to commemorate your graduating class. For instance, the class members of 1957 could give $19.57, $195.70, $1,957.00 or even $19,570.00. Give what you can but remember, no donation is too small.

SHS Scholarships now accepting donations for 2008

This is our first official request for donations for the SHS Scholarships for 2008. We hope you will contribute and help us spread the word. As you know, North High School and South High School have combined into one high school. The new Springfield High School opened September 8, 2008. To honor this reunification, a task force was established by three SHS graduates to raise student scholarship money.

Our goal is quite simple. We wish to create a permanent endowment through the Springfield Foundation to provide scholarship assistance to recent graduates of Springfield High School now and far into the future. Our ultimate goal is to raise $1,000,000, but first we must first raise $30,000 before any scholarships can be awarded. Donations are tax deductible.

For those of you who have not previously received information about the SHS Scholarships, this will introduce you to a project that was started by three graduates of the SHS Class of 1957 - Jack Hutslar in Virginia plus Phil McClelland and Jack Reynard, both in Sprngfield. This is a true grassroots program. We need your assistance.

2008 Contribution - To make your 2008 contribution, print out the Donor form found at www.SHSschholarships.com. Tax deductible contributions are to be sent directly to the Springfield Foundation. At this time, there is no other recognized fundraising program.

First, please make your initial contribution for 2008 before the end of the year.

Second, please forward this information to other members of your class plus your friends, family and teachers. Please help us spread the word and help our SHS graduates.

Third, please make copies of the Donor form. Give them to your friends, family and faculty from SHS, North and South.

Fourth, Please make copies of the SHS Donor form and put a copy in the envelope when you pay your bills each month. See the Donor Form button on line.

Fifth, The SHS Logo – You noticed that there is an SHS Scholarship logo at www.SHSscholarships.com. This distinctive SHS logo can be added to any personal or business web site. Links can be set up to take viewers directly to www.SHSschholarships.com. Again, this is a genuine grassroots effort. Please help us make this happen.

I would like to thank you for visiting the SHS Scholarships site and checking out the latest News. This blog will keep you posted on current events. If you have not already done so, please look through the information provided elsewhere at this site.

In the near future we will begin to officially solicit scholarship funds. They will benefit the recent graduates of the newly reunited Springfield [Ohio] High School.

Our primary means of fundraising at the present time are [1] a grassroots email campaign and [2] contacting reunion groups.

By grassroots, we actually mean that we want you to tell others about the SHS Scholarships. So, please send our SHS Scholarships web site link to your former classmates, friends, relatives and former faculty members. Please ask them to tell others.
